October in the East Kootenay

October 2014 has to rank as one of the warmest ever.

We didn’t have stifling heat or anything but overall the temperatures were fairly mild and snow was mostly kept to the high country.

There weren’t an abundance of sunny days, either. But autumn’s full spectrum was on display nonetheless.

To put in perspective, Carrie and I sat out on our front deck until almost 11 p.m. Halloween night without ever feeling cold.

We also had some lunar and solar treats in October, which I believe inspired the already fabulous October light – the angling away; the subsiding; the mellowing.

Thanks to the upcoming election and the blinking fast passage of time, we didn’t get out and about as often as we normally do this October.

Still, I was able to ramble up Toby Creek, west of Invermere, at the start of the month to cover an anti Jumbo Glacier Resort rally at Mineral King Mine. It was a muted day but the photographer trapped in an office before a computer gave it a go anyway.

We also found an afternoon mid-month to do the Cranbrook-Wasa-Kimberley-Cranbrook loop, including a refreshing tour up to Lazy Lake.

A mid-month trek to the Elk Valley was too busy and poorly lit to produce any worthwhile images.

Hockey pool madness lured me back to the Columbia Valley three-quarters of the way through the month, with a stirring morning drive home to Cranbrook the next day, with stops at Canal Flats and area and Premier Lake.

The rest of the images contained in this month’s collection are from the Cranbrook and Kimberley areas.
