New Fernie Transfer Station opening slated for July

The new Fernie Transfer Station will open on Monday, July 2. A contract will be signed with Waste Management for the operation of the new Transfer Station for the term July 2 to July 1, 2017.

Columbia Valley Secondary Suites Bylaw to exclude portions of Area F

Bylaw 2369, an amendment to the Upper Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw to permit secondary suites throughout the Columbia Valley, was referred to staff by the Board of Directors with instructions to modify the Bylaw to exclude portions of Electoral Area F. It is expected that the Board will consider a revised secondary suites bylaw at their next meeting on July 6.

Fernie Alpine Resort OCP

The board gave first and second reading to Bylaw 2363 – a new Official Community Plan for Fernie Alpine Resort (pictured above). The new OCP includes some amendments to the location and density of previously approved development as well as updates to a number of policy areas important to the future development of the resort including road, trail and infrastructure servicing, employee housing and other development guidelines. A public hearing on Bylaw 2363 will be held June 26 at 7 p.m. in the Fernie Family Centre.

West Fernie Cost Benefit Analysis to proceed

KPMG has been awarded the contract for the West Fernie Restructure Cost Benefit Analysis. The $31,000 study will be funded by the Electoral Area A portion of the Elk Valley Tax Sharing Funds and provincial public consultation funds. The City of Fernie will also be requested to share 50% of the cost.

Wasa Outdoor Rink project receives more funding

The chair and chief administrative officer have been authorized to sign the Contribution Agreement with CBT to assist with funding the construction of the Wasa Outdoor Ice Rink, through the Community Development Program. The Wasa Rink project received 80% funding earlier this year from the Province. CBT’s contribution of $8800 will make up the remaining 20%.

Timber Ridge Utility Advisory Commission appointments

Bill Honeywell has been reappointed to the Timber Ridge Utility Advisory Commission. He will be joined by several new members on the Commission: Ken Farn, James Cuming and Scott Frank. All the appointments are for a two-year term.

Regional Flood Hazard Assessment and Mitigation Plan

The proposal submitted by BGC Engineering for completion of phase one of a regional flood hazard assessment and mitigation plan for the RDEK in the amount of $41,776 has been accepted.

Ministry asked to address road issues

A letter will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure requesting that a plan be put in place to reconstruct the sloughing portion of Ski Hill Road in the Fernie Area. A second letter will be sent requesting a review of the condition of Columbia Lake Road and the completion of required maintenance.

Interior Health asked to respond to concerns over sewage disposal in campgrounds

A letter will be sent to Interior Health Authority requesting they be prepared to respond to public concerns regarding inadequate sewage disposal in campgrounds by allocating appropriate investigation and enforcement resources.

New Planning Process for Wilmer / Dry Gulch

The board agreed to move forward with a planning process for the rural communities of Dry Gulch and Wilmer. Presently, the two communities in Electoral Area G do not have an official community plan in place. It is expected that a planning process will take about 18 months to complete and will include a variety of opportunities for public input. Residents in the two communities can expect to receive more information on this initiative in the coming months.

Letter of support for Squamish Lillooet Regional District’s proposal

A letter will be sent to the Pacific Fuel Management Working Group c/o UBCM supporting the Squamish Lillooet Regional District’s suggestion that documented FireSmart activities undertaken within a regional district and to which regional district staff time has been dedicated, be eligible as in-kind contributions under the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative program with such activities being accredited the same monetary value as under the FireSmart program schedule.

Coal Discovery Centre Society thanked

The Coal Discovery Centre Society is being thanked for its contribution to the Coal Discovery Trail. The Society recently donated $5,175 to the RDEK for improvements to the Coal Discovery Trail in the Hosmer area.

Discretionary Grants In Aid (DGIA)

Fernie Golf and Country Club

The Fernie Golf and Country Club will receive $,1000 from the Electoral Area A DGIA account to support the Stars in the Valley Golf Tournament, being held on June 18 in support of STARS air ambulance.

Mount Baker Secondary School will receive $500 from the Electoral Area C DGIA account to help with food and beverage expenses for the 2012 Dry Grad Prom.

The Meadowbrook Community Association will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area E DGIA account to help with incorporation start up costs for their Association.

Windermere Water User Public Consultation Meetings

Session 3: Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Windermere Elementary School Gym

Each session will include sharing the community survey results, getting your feedback and hearing your ideas. Part of each session will include breaking out into working groups to talk more about how best to approach the water system upgrade opportunities.

LWMP Implementation Public Meetings

Wednesday, June 20, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (presentation and Q&A at 6 p.m.) at Windermere Community Hall—4726 North Street.

The initial draft of new surface water zoning regulations and a Shoreline Development Permit Area have now been completed. Come learn about the new regulations, review the draft documents and tell us where you think we got it right and where we could make changes.

Electronics Recycling Round Up

Saturday, June 23 —10 a.m. to 3 p.m. —Invermere Community Hall Parking Lot. This event is being organized by Encorp Pacific, the company that oversees the electronics recycling program in BC (this is not an RDEK program or event). Items that can be recycled include: display devices; desktop and laptop computers; computer peripherals; scanners, printers, fax machines; phones and answering machines; vehicle audio/video systems; personal audio & video systems; wireless PDAs; pagers; home audio/video systems.
