Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Nov. 19 District of Sparwood council meeting.

Delegations

WildSafeBC Season Update

Deanna Haycock shared the achievements and activities of WildSafeBC during their season.

Sparwood Public Library

Laurel Lowe provided an update on library operations and developments.

2025 Community Funding and Support

Council approved the following Category 1 Grant Allocations for inclusion in the District of Sparwood 2025 operating budget:

  1. Youth Action Sparwood: $2,000 (facility rentals).
  2. Sparwood Search and Rescue: $1,500 (gas and diesel).
  3. Fernie Women’s Resource Centre: $2,499 (facility rentals).
  4. Sparwood Golf Club: $30,000 (operating grant) + $15,000 (matching capital grant).
  5. Sparwood & District Arts & Heritage Council: $3,368 (facility rentals).
  6. WildSafeBC: $3,000 (community programs/services).
  7. Sparwood Trails Alliance: $10,000 (trail development).
  8. Michel, Natal, Sparwood Heritage Society: $59,980 (operating grant) + $6,000 (utilities).
  9. Coal Miner Days Society: $34,500 (operating grant, rentals, advertising, and staff support).
  10. Sparwood Visitor Information Centre: $66,120 (operating grant) + $8,000 (economic development).
  11. Sparwood Public Library: $206,732 (operating grant) + $10,000 (capital grant) + $6,000 (donation matching).
  12. Sparwood Secondary School Grad Committee: $13,083 (facility rentals).

New Funding Approvals

Council approved the following new funding requests:

  • Elk Valley Air Cadets Squadron 279: $1,396.26 (facility rental and staff time).
  • Uplift Community Support Association: $3,723 (boardroom rental).
  • Sparwood Secondary School Grad: $883 (staff time to hang banners).

BUSINESS

Development Variance Permit for 441 Pine Avenue – Timbers Phase 2

Council has authorized Staff to provide notice to affected properties of its intent to consider development variance permit, DVP2024-010, to vary requirements of the District’s Zoning Bylaw to remove the minimum unit sizes and reduce the minimum lot size as well as the District’s Off Street Parking Bylaw to reduce the minimum parking requirements for the proposed 32-unit multi-family development at 441 Pine Avenue.

Public Removal of Fallen Trees Policy

The Public Removal of Fallen Trees Policy was approved by council, which included a new application with a release of liability, waiver of claims, assumption of risks and indemnity agreement.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

Regular Meeting of Council – Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at Council Chambers, 136 Spruce Avenue.

The public is encouraged to attend Council and Committee meetings. Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month, unless otherwise changed or cancelled by resolution.
