Waste collection, facility locations survey results released

Results from a recent public survey were presented to City of Cranbrook council Monday night, which gathered residents’ input on curbside waste and recycling collection, including service frequency, cart sizes, and the potential addition of organics collection.

The survey also gathered preferences for the future locations of a new gymnastics’ facility and childcare services.

The survey was conducted between March 31 and April 25, 2025, through two formats: a statistically valid mail-out survey sent to 1,600 randomly selected households (with a 33.7% response rate), and an open public opinion survey which received 1,077 responses.

The city engaged Discovery Research to conduct and report on the two-part survey. Discovery Research previously conducted the Budget 2025 Citizen Survey in October 2024.

Cale Lewis from Discovery Research presented the findings virtually to Council Monday night. Some of the key highlights of the survey results included:

Bi-Weekly Garbage Collection:

53% of respondents support switching to bi-weekly garbage pickup with the existing bin; another 12% support the change if given a larger bin.

Cart Size Options:

63% support offering three size options for garbage carts (120L, 240L, 360L); 62% support the same for recycling carts.

Service Satisfaction:

89% are satisfied with garbage collection services; 78% are satisfied with recycling services.

Organic Waste Practices:

79% currently dispose of food waste in the garbage; 31% compost food waste at home. 88% take yard waste to the Cranbrook Transfer Station; 19% compost it in their yard.

Support for Organics Program:

51% support a new curbside organics collection program; 25% oppose it.

Facility Location Preferences:

76% prefer the new gymnastics club to be located at the former library site beside Western Financial Place and 54% prefer Balment Park for the new childcare facility.

“This information will help guide council’s discussions moving forward on service improvements to our solid waste collection, and future recreation and childcare planning,” said Mayor Wayne Price. “On behalf of council, I am grateful for the important feedback from our residents, which we are very happy to have. Thank you to everyone who participated in this survey.”

Council received the survey findings report on Monday night and referred the report to the next Committee-of-the-Whole meeting for further discussion on June 16, 2025, prior to making any decisions.
