New format for Kimberley candidates’ forums

With a large number of candidates (17) running for six City of Kimberley council seats, and two people vying for the mayor’s chair, a new format for an all-candidates’ forum has been devised.

Sponsored by Kimberley & District Chamber of Commerce, the two candidates’ forums are being held Nov. 8 and 9 at McKim Theatre.

The following the format to be followed at the forums, as outlined by the chamber of commerce

NOVEMBER 8 – Councilors

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Candidate Market

– An opportunity for candidates to meet with the voters before the forum and participate in a unique visioning opportunity!  Candidates are invited to set up a display and or bring flyers/brochures and be available for one-on-one conversations with voters.
Brainstorming Banners – We will engage students to decorate two banners that will be put up in the foyer.
Banner 1: What Issues and Questions are important to you?
Banner 2: What has Kimberley City Council accomplished by 2014?
Citizens will be provided with sticky notes and pens and will place their input on the appropriate banner. At 6:30 the data will be compiled and the major themes and questions will be identified.
6:30 – 6:55 p.m. – Theme and Question Compilation. Seating of the Candidates
7 p.m. Introductions – Moderator Ingrid Liepa – The Connecting Link
Each candidate will be allowed two minutes for opening remarks;
7:35 – 8:35 p.m. Question Period; five to six candidates will be randomly drawn to answer each question and the questions will be evenly rotated so that each candidate will answer three questions. Responses will be limited to one minute per candidate.
8:35 to 9 p.m.  Closing Remarks.
Each candidate will be allowed one minute for closing remarks.
9 to 9:25 p.m. Meet with candidates one-on-one.
9:30 p.m.  Auditorium Closes.

NOVEMBER 9 – Mayors

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.  Candidate Market

7:20 – 8:50 p.m. Question Period.  Each candidate will respond to questions.
8:50 to 9 p.m. Closing Remarks.
Each candidate will be allowed three minutes for closing remarks.
9 to 9:25 p.m. Meet with candidates one-on-one
9:30 p.m. Auditorium Closes
