It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Thomas William Aikman of Cranbrook at 79 years of age. Doug passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Joseph Creek Care Village.

Doug was born in Calgary and was raised in Kimberley and Cranbrook. As a child he enjoyed his summers with his grandparents in Canmore, AB. He worked as an articling student until he received his C.A. degree in 1959. For a short time he worked for Revenue Canada in Penticton and then moved back to Cranbrook in 1962 where he became a managing partner of A. J. Shankland and Company. Later, he joined the international firm of BDO Dunwoody. Doug retired in 1992.

Doug married Noreen Ryde in Victoria and together they raised 5 children. Doug was a member of the Gyro Club and the Cranbrook Golf Club. He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed many hours landscaping his yard. Doug was a huge fan of the Montreal Canadiens.

Doug is predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Catherine Aikman and his sister Shirley-Mae Jolie. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Noreen, his 5 children Randy (Maureen) Aikman, Judy (Trent) Taylor, Sandra (Barry) Rudd, Allan (Narinder) Aikman, Jim (Rhonda) Aikman, 10 grandchildren Michelle, Lindsay, Sarah, Melanie, Amanda, Cydney, Robert, Lauren, Brendan and Ryan and 2 great-grandchildren Hayley and Baby Cox and numerous other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one sister Rae Holdaway.

A memorial mass for Doug will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Christ The Servant Church in Cranbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the: Alzheimer Society of BC, #300, 828 – West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 1E2.
