Obituary of Elizabeth Alma Barzilay
Elizabeth Alma Barzilay
After graduating from high school, Liz followed her calling into nursing and was accepted into the program at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow. She graduated in 1960, beginning a career grounded in compassion and care. It was also at her graduation where she met her future husband, Peter—a meeting that would grow into a lifelong partnership. After a courtship of three and a half years, they married on November 30, 1963, in New Glasgow.
Life with Peter was full of movement, adventure, and new beginnings. His work took their growing family from Truro to Sydney, Halifax, St. John’s, Winnipeg, Calgary, and eventually Kamloops, where they would settle for 22 years. Along the way, Liz welcomed four children: Jim (born in Sydney), Carolyn (Halifax), and Helena and Adrianus (Newfoundland). Liz devoted her adult life to raising her children—and later three of her grandchildren—with unwavering love, patience, and good humor, even when the task was not an easy one.
Liz and Peter ran a business together for 12 years, and when Peter earned his pilot’s license, a new chapter of adventure opened. They shared many memorable flights to Vancouver Island and throughout the Interior. When time allowed, Liz and Peter enjoyed traveling—holidays to Rockaway Beach, Oregon, trips to Mexico, and cherished returns to Nova Scotia for nursing reunions.
In 2000, Liz and Peter chose a quieter pace of life, moving to Invermere and then Cranbrook to be close to their grandchildren—something Liz treasured deeply.
Liz faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength and grace. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1988, she underwent surgery and radiation and enjoyed many years in full remission. Lung cancer was discovered in 2022, and over the following three years, Liz endured surgery and radiation treatments in Kelowna with courage and dignity. After seven trips, when treatment options were exhausted, Liz chose to spend her final days at home, just as she wished.
Liz was predeceased by her parents, Wilbur and Alma Hills; her brothers, Harold and William; and her nephew, Scottie. She will be deeply missed by her husband Peter, her children, grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends whose lives she touched with her kindness, warmth, and quiet strength.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Nishi and the staff at Fischer Peak Clinic for their compassionate care and support. Special thanks also to the Home Care nurses and aides, whose kindness and gentleness brought comfort during Liz’s final days. The family feels truly blessed by these remarkable caregivers.
In keeping with Liz’s wishes, no flowers please. Donations in her memory may be made to Angel Flights East Kootenays, in appreciation of their invaluable service to Kelowna.
Liz’s life was one of love, devotion, resilience, and grace—and her legacy lives on in the family she cherished so deeply.
