Obituary for Elizabeth “Betty” Susan STRONSKI
Elizabeth “Betty” Susan STRONSKI
On Wednesday, September 5, 2018, Elizabeth “Betty” Stronski, formerly of Fernie, passed away in Victoria.
Betty is survived by 4 children: Darrell (Mary) Southgate of Fernie, BC, Gordon (Cherie) Southgate of Cranbrook, BC, Janet (Brian) Downie of Leduc AB, and Michele (Paul) Caouette of Shawnigan Lake, BC; 9 grandchildren: Laura and Sherrie (Darrell), Kyle, Breanna, and Andrew (Gordon), Erin and Lukas (Janet), and Jordan and Jesey (Michele); 13 great grandchildren, and her brother William (Marguerite) Duffell and family. She was predeceased by her parents William and Laura (Little) Duffell.
Born and raised in Calgary, AB, Betty moved to Fernie, BC with her children in the early 1970’s. While living in BC she fostered many special needs children throughout the years, including Justin Knipple, who lived in her home from the age of 3 to 21. Because of her devotion to children in need, Betty was recognized by the Ministry of Social Services & Housing, and by the BC Federation of Foster Parent Association. Betty was also a devout Christian, becoming a layperson for Christ Church Anglican in Fernie.
In 1993 Betty moved to Vancouver Island, settling in Victoria. Approximately 5 years ago, she was diagnosed with dementia and spent her remaining years at Acacia Ty Mawr, where she was known for her bright smile and beautiful blue eyes.
Betty loved to walk and hike, especially with family in the Rocky Mountains. She was always mesmerized by the size of the trees, speaking often of their magnificence. Betty loved and appreciated the beauty and tranquility of Mother Nature’s playground; in honor of that, her ashes will be spread in some of her favorite places.
A small family service was held in Victoria on September 11th.
