Obituary for ISABEL IRIS SLOBODIAN

SLOBODIAN (BAILEY)ISABEL IRIS

APRIL 5, 1929 – NOVEMBER 29, 2019

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Isabel at the age of 90 at the Cranbrook Hospital.  Born the oldest of 9 to Ethel & Bill Bailey at the Kimberley Hospital, she had 6 sisters (Gene, June, Bev, Carol, Judy, Betty) and 2 brothers (Terry & Floyd (Butch)).

In her younger years she worked at the CM&S Canteen in Chapman Camp, where she met her future husband Michael Slobodian.  They married in 1948 & lived together for 65 years in Champman Camp, raising four children.  The family was blessed with lots of opportunity to travel from Greenland to Hawaii where Isabel added to her souvenir doll and spoon collections.

She loved sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, making tin furniture & wall plaques, dolls, doll clothes, gardening and baking.  We all enjoyed her shortbread, striped jellies & great meals.  She created a miniature Bavarian replica of Kimberley platzl, on display at the Kimberley Museum.  She loved flowers and worked a few seasons at the Wasa Greenhouse.  Isabel enjoyed playing cards, board games, yard games at the Wasa cabin and games of chance be it bingo, keno, lottery or visiting casinos often with lucky results.

Being the oldest, Isabel helping with caring for her siblings, raised her own family, babysat for many others and eventually cared for her own mother in her later years.

Keeping the cabin at Wasa Lake in the family allowed for many wonderful summer gatherings, celebrations, BBQ’s and a place for friends and family to gather.  Happy memories at Wasa will be shared for years with more to come this summer as we plan to gather family again to remember all the good times.

She is survived by two sisters, Gene and Bev, daughter Gayle, sons Calvin & Daryl (Samantha), 7 grandchildren, Derek, Kristopher, Jade, Heather, Adam, Cyndi & Alexander, 3 great-grandchildren (Layna, Tristen, Greyson).  Predeceased by six siblings, son Brent in 2012 & husband Michael in 2014.  Iabel always fondly shared stories of her grandparents Edith (Nan) & Alfred (Pamp) Trinder.

The Family wishes to thank the staff at the Cranbrook Hospital for their excellent care.  Family will gather for interment at the Kimberley Cemetery followed by a celebration with all at Mark Memorial in Cranbrook on Saturday, December 14th at 1:00 pm.
