Obituary of Betty-Ann Newhouse

BETTY-ANN NEWHOUSE
February 17, 1944 – November 17, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty-Ann Newhouse on November 17, 2024, at the age of 80.

Betty-Ann was the daughter of Alf and Ruby Bakken, and spent her entire life rooted in the community she loved.

A proud Cranbrook local, Betty-Ann had a passion for curling. She was involved in the CP Rail and Senior curling leagues, winning various bonspiels and even scored the elusive curling achievement – the “eight ender.” Betty-Ann had a wide circle of friends and shared countless laughs and good times as a member of the monthly birthday club-a highlight she looked
forward to with great joy. She enjoyed bowling and gardening and was also a cherished member of the local McDonald’s coffee club, where her presence and conversation will be dearly missed every week. Her artistic talents included oil painting, photography and sewing. A gifted artist and entrepreneur, Betty-Ann ran a successful home-based business creating handcrafted pottery, which sold in boutique shops across Canada and the United Sates. Her work ethic and creative spirit touched many lives.

Betty-Ann passed away in one of her favourite places-Las Vegas-where she travelled each year with great enthusiasm. She had a true knack for travel deals and took great pride in collecting points and scoring free stays. Her many cruises and adventures with travel companions, especially her best friend Mary, allowed her to see the world and brought her immense joy and lasting memories.

Betty-Ann is survived by her children: Kim Lees (Tisdale); Randa (KC) Stone (Lethbridge); Steve (Lynne) Newhouse (Cranbrook); Rene (Matt) Newhouse Gillespie (Calgary). She also leaves behind several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving her is her brother Barry (Laura) Bakken (Edmonton); best friend and sister-in-law Mary Newhouse (Shaunavon); sisters-in-law Sharon Stolz (Regina) and Shirley Newhouse (Regina); and will be missed by her dog Jiggs.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alf and Ruby Bakken; former husband and good friend Harold Kenneth (Ken) Newhouse; and in-laws Wilma and Harold Newhouse; four brother-inlaw’s Gordon, Wes, Randy and Glenn

A celebration of life Ceremony will take plate on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 2 p.m. at the Cranbrook Eagles Hall, Cranbrook. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Betty-Ann’s memory to the East Kootenay BC SPCA, 3339 British Columbia 3 &, BC-95, Cranbrook, BC V1 C 4H6.
