Obituary of Calvin Edward Caldwell
Calvin Edward Caldwell
It is with great sadness that his loving family announces the sudden passing of Calvin Edward Caldwell, who died peacefully in his sleep on June 6, 2025.
Born December 21, 1947, Calvin was a farm boy who grew up near Ponoka, Alberta. After studying photography at NAIT in Edmonton, he pursued a lifelong career in photography and journalism. He spent twenty years at the daily newspaper, the Red Deer Advocate, where he took photographs of politicians and royalty including Princess Diana, but his favorite subjects were everyday Albertans. A gifted photographer, Calvin loved the prairie landscape and left behind many striking images of fields and skies.
After short stints at the Winnipeg Sun and the Victoria Times-Colonist, he returned to Alberta and worked for the Edmonton Examiner, and then moved on to the daily Edmonton Journal where worked as a page designer until his retirement. He was a valued employee who designed many front pages including one that appeared the day after Diana’s death.
Calvin was a highly intelligent individual with a great sense of humour and a warm personality who made lifelong friends wherever he lived and worked. As a young man, he was an enthusiastic jogger and skier. In later years he was an ardent sports fan who spent hours watching soccer, baseball, and, of course, his beloved Edmonton Oilers.
Calvin was divorced with one daughter, Katie Niddrie of Invermere. He was extremely proud of his daughter and her family and moved to Columbia Garden Village in 2022 to be closer to them. He is survived by Katie and her husband Tom Niddrie, and grandchildren Nora, Juliet and Jack Niddrie, all of whom he adored. He is also survived by his sister Heather and her husband Blaine Lewis of Ponoka, their children Erin (Lorne) and Craig Lewis, nephews Alan and Stephen Caldwell of Calgary, along with his former wife and friend Elinor Florence of Invermere.
A private family memorial service will be held.
