Obituary of Ellen Joyce Stapleton

Ellen Joyce Stapleton (Morgan)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Ellen Joyce Stapleton (née Morgan) at age 85.

Ellen and her twin sister were born on April 26, 1940, in Indian Head, Saskatchewan to Jean and Thomas Morgan.

Her lifelong pursuit of knowledge began in a one-room schoolhouse and led her to the University of Regina, where she majored in medical sciences. Ellen built a remarkable career as a laboratory technologist, dedicating 46 years to the hospitals in Cranbrook. One of the highlights of her career was solving the 1996 Cranbrook water Cryptosporidium contamination, a testament to her sharp mind and commitment to public health.

In 1962, Ellen met the love of her life, George “Snuffy” Stapleton, at Fairmont Hot Springs. They married on April 18, 1964, and together raised two children, John and Stacey. Ellen often joked that she spent most of her life “looking after George,” a role she embraced with humor and love.

Ellen had a passion for adventure. She traveled the world, rode a camel at the pyramids, had lunch at the Acropolis, and even smuggled swords from Spain and trinkets from Asia in her purse – long before airport security was what it is today. Her stories were legendary.

She loved the outdoors, spending countless hours gardening and caring for her beautiful yard. In retirement, Ellen found joy in quilting, making treasured pieces with the Cranbrook Quilters’ Guild, including fidget quilts and Quilts of Valour. She also enjoyed puttering around the cozy log home she and George built together.

Ellen’s legacy lives on in the stories she told, the love she gave, and the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Ellen is lovingly remembered by her twin sister Hellen Temple, son John (Lori), daughter Stacey (Marlon), grandchildren Jason, Tyler (Brittney), Jesse, Taylor, Kevin, Kiara, and Brandon, and her great-grandchildren Hudson, Boden, and Callum.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, George “Snuffy” Stapleton, and her parents Jean and Thomas Morgan.

In respect of Ellen’s wishes, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cranbrook Quilters Guild.
