Obituary of Greig Charles Simpson
Greig Charles Simpson
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our father Greig Charles Simpson, who left this world peacefully on July 8, 2025, at age 75, in Cranbrook, BC, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Vancouver, BC, on August 25, 1949, Greig was the son of Lawrence and Doreen Simpson. He is predeceased by his parents; his brother, Brent; sister, Joy; and his first love and the mother of his children, Margaret Simpson (Wilcott).
Greig is lovingly remembered by his children, Rosemary Snowdon (Kevin), Alexander Simpson (Shannon), and Suzanne Simpson; his brother, Colin Simpson (Daphne); nephew, Stuart Simpson; and grandchildren, Dustin Parnell, Ty Simpson, and Alexis Simpson. He also leaves behind his longtime friends, Don and Rose Ross and Norma Jean Boisvert, who held a special place in his heart.
Greig lived a life full of passion, curiosity, and quiet strength. An animal lover to his core, he found companionship and joy in his beloved dogs and cats—especially Enzo and Norton.
He raised his children in Chilliwack with Margaret then later as a single father. He coached all his children’s softball teams and even played alongside them all when they got older.
A skilled pilot and lifelong aviation enthusiast, Greig was a licensed private aviator and a talented RC airplane racer and pattern champion. His love for the sky was matched by his deep appreciation for nature. He spent decades in the wilderness, particularly on his treasured annual hunting trips to the Kootenays with his son, and later grandson—a tradition since 1983. Greig was also an avid fisherman and golfer, always finding peace and purpose in the outdoors.
Greig worked for many years in corrections while raising his family. During his time as a Corrections Officer at the Chilliwack Forest Camps, he was affectionately known as the “Great Root Bear”—a nickname that spoke to his warm presence and sense of humour. He was also an active member of the BCGEU and served as a shop steward, proudly advocating for his fellow officers.
After retiring at the age of 52, Greig continued to give back to his community. He dedicated time to nonprofit work and was a proud and active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where he found fellowship, purpose, and the opportunity to serve others.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 2:00 PM at the Chilliwack IOOF Lodge at 46008 Reece Ave, Chilliwack, BC. All who knew and loved Greig are invited to join us in honouring a life rooted in nature, shaped by compassion for animals, and defined by quiet acts of generosity.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local animal shelter or nonprofit of your choice, in honour of Greig’s kind and giving spirit.
