Obituary of Gustav Theodore Meshwa
Gustav Theodore Meshwa
Gus was born in Scandia, Alberta and moved to Cranbrook as an infant, where he grew up on the family farm alongside his mother, brother, and sister. Even in his early years, he showed a strong work ethic, delivering milk before and after school each day. That same determination and sense of responsibility stayed with him throughout his life.
In 1956, Gus married the love of his life, Angela Leschiutta (Angie), and together they built a beautiful life and raised two children, Melanie and Chirs. In June of 1969, they purchased their cherished property at Lazy Lake— a place that would become the heart of their family gatherings and a sanctuary of peace and joy for generations to come.
Lazy Lake was Gus and Angie’s happy place. It was where they felt most at home, hosting countless family events and welcoming friends with warmth and open arms. One of the most cherished traditions at the lake was the annual Thanksgiving bocce tournament, a spirited event that brought laughter, competition, and love to all who attended. Over the years, so many people passed through the doors of the cabin and left with full hearts, touched by the kindness and generosity of Gus and Angie.
Travel was another passion that Gus and Angie shared. Together, they explored many parts of the world, often through cruises and adventurous getaways. They also enjoyed winters spent down south, creating memories and friendships along the way.
Professionally, Gus was proud to become an electrician, building and running his own successful business through years of dedication and hard work. He found great fulfillment in his career and took pride in the craftsmanship and service he provided.
Among his greatest joys were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a unique ability to make each of them feel truly seen and deeply loved. He took the time to get to know each one, asking thoughtful questions and creating meaningful connections. He never missed an opportunity to share a story or a laugh, and his warmth left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
In his later years, Gus made his home at Joseph Creek, where he found comfort in familiar faces and daily routines. He especially enjoyed his time in the coffee room, where he shared many conversations, laughs, and quiet moments over coffee with friends. He also
loved chatting with the servers and staff, always taking the time to connect and offer a kind word.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his welcoming spirit, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the memories made at Lazy Lake and beyond.
He is survived by his daughter, Melanie, and his son, Chris; his former son-in-law, Bill, and former daughter-in-law, Karen; his grandchildren: Jeff (Meghan), along with their four children, Owen, Isaac, Abigail, and Elliott, and Scott (Deanna) and their two children, Kelty and Roslyn; his sister, Nel; his sisters-in-law, Irma and Sandy (Barry); and several special nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Angela; his mother, Helen; brother, Val; and brother-in-law, Moris.
The family extends sincere thanks to the dedicated team of doctors and the compassionate nursing staff who cared for him through the years, and especially in the last few months. We would also like to thank the caring staff at Joseph Creek for their support, friendship, and compassion during his years there.
A private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the BC Dementia Care Society.
