Obituary of Guy SUTHERLAND
Guy SUTHERLAND
With immense sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Guy Sutherland on January 22, 2026, in Fernie, BC, after a short battle with cancer.
Guy was born on November 8, 1964, in Burnaby, BC, joining his older brother, Dave and parents, Bob and Karen. Brothers, Quinn and Lance followed shortly after. His younger sister, Shawna, arrived with Bob’s second marriage.
In 1989, Guy’s life changed with the arrival of his eldest child. He was a hands-on father to baby Kaila, who inherited his love of animals and resourcefulness. Cameron joined the family in 1993 and is the spitting image of his dad in every way. Jordan came along in 1996 and inherited Guy’s dark sense of humour and laugh. The family was completed in 2001 with Naioka’s arrival. She inherited his softer traits of warmth and understanding.
An avid sports fan, Guy was a lifelong supporter of the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Blue Jays. His memory for sports statistics, players, and coaches remained sharp until the end. Animals gravitated toward his kindness and warmth, and he always loved being around them. He was a charmer, full of wit.
Guy is survived by his children: Kaila (and grandson Landon), Cameron (and granddog Jonah), Jordan, and Naioka (Sven, and grandcat Nya); his siblings and many nieces and nephews with whom he shared close relationships. He was predeceased by his parents, his father, Bob in 1997 and his mother, Karen in 2012.
There will not be a formal service, at his request, but the family will hold a celebration of life this summer.
Sincere gratitude is extended to all of the doctors and nurses at Elk Valley Hospital. The care he received will never be forgotten. Thank you to Dr. Wilson for taking him on as a patient and helping to navigate the cancer journey.
