Obituary of James THOMSON

James “Jim” THOMSON

May 25, 1938 ~ March 13, 2026 (age 87)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father and husband, James “Jim” Thomson, who passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at the Elk Valley Hospital, in Fernie, BC with family by his side. Jim was eighty-seven years old, just a few months short of his eighty-eight birthday.

Jim was reunited with his parents, James and Phyllis Thomson and sisters: Mona, Ruthie, and Phyllis.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, who is also the love of his life, Sandra Thomson; daughters: Stacey Thomson, Leigh Payne (Dave), and Dena Webster; grandchildren: Ashley Travis (Marc), Shay Travis (Toni), Miranda Weibe (Clay), Jessica Payne (Connor), Hunter Webster (Heather), and Colten Webster; great-grandchildren: Trinity, Paisley, and Mason; brother, Bill Thomson, and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was born on May 25, 1938, to parents, James and Phyllis Thomson. Later, he met his beautiful wife, Sandra, when he was working for her father, Harold Rutledge, who had a logging mill at Hartley Lake. Sandra saw Jim and told her sister “I am going to marry him.” That came true on April 11, 1964. They lived happily together in Fernie most of their lives, raising their three daughters before moving to Cranbrook, BC after Jim retired. They lived there for fourteen years before moving to Sparwood in 2025, to be closer to their daughters.

Jim was a construction worker for over forty-five years, where he built most of the highways throughout BC, including roads through the mountains and contracting with the local mines. He built ski runs at the Fernie ski hill, jobs that most would not like to do, such as hanging walls. He always said he liked the thrill and he was a legend to many that worked for him. He was a foreman most of the time, but still liked running the machinery.

Jim loved to hunt in his younger days. He loved spending time with his family; camping, taking trips, snowmobiling, and teaching his girls to do almost anything.

Rest in peace, dad, we will miss you and love you forever.

The Thomson family would like to thank the many nurses at the Elk Valley Hospital, in Fernie, along with Dr. Tristan Brownrigg for the care Jim received.

Thank you all for your love and support at this difficult time.
