Obituary of John Roderick Ross
John Roderick Ross, also known as Johnny and JR, passed away at the Cranbrook Regional Hospital November 29, 2025, surrounded by his family.
John was born November 12, 1943 in Portage La Prairie Manitoba to Dorthy and Forbes (Slim) Ross.
When John was young, they moved to Chilliwack and later to the Caribou Country where John started working on Gang ranches, feeding cows and breaking horses. As John got older, he found the love of running equipment and helped out at the ranches in the area running equipment. At the young age of 17 he started swamping on the pipeline project and slowly moved into running equipment. John spent most of his life working for one pipeline to another all across Canada. When he wasn’t working the pipeline you could find him working on a highway project, building roads for the forestry, snow removal and building right-a-ways for railway companies.
In John’s pipeline days it took him to Manitoba where he met his first wife (Marguerite) where they married, later moving to the Kootenay’s in 1964. John and Marg had 3 children; Tim, Troy and Elaine and settled down in Cranbrook where he made his home ever since. John remarried Sharon Diane in 2004 living his life on an acreage up Gold Creek.
John had a passion for all animals but especially horses. He spent years with the Cranbrook Little Britches Rodeo and the Cranbrook Chariot and Chuck Wagon club. Also spending his younger years moving the wild horses from Baker Mountain.
John was predeceased by his mom-Dorthy, Dad-Forbes; sister’s Leila, Ester, Janet, Marg. Brother-Ian and grandson-Brennan.
He survived by his wife Sharon, sister Edie, Son’s Tim and Troy (Amy, Mycah, Wesley), daughter Elaine (Bob, Aislyn), Granddaughter Brittany (Marshall), and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
