Obituary of Lorraine Shirley Vance
Lorraine Shirley Vance
May 5, 1935 – June 21, 2025
Shirley Vance passed away peacefully in her sleep in Cranbrook at the age of 90, having outlived her first husband, Donald John Vance, and nearly all her contemporaries. She lived a rich and full life—first as a devoted mother and air force wife, and later as a painter and avid conversationalist. Shirley was a voracious reader and remained bright and talkative to the end. Even with so much to say, she always kept a bit of mystery about her, holding her cards close to her chest.
Though petite in stature, she loomed larger than life. In her 70s, she married again in Las Vegas and later navigated that chapter with characteristic independence, choosing divorce after a few years. A lifetime of travel during her years as a military spouse laid the foundation for a love of change and movement, and she continued to relocate across the country in her later years before finally settling in Kimberley. There, she spent her remaining days doing what she loved most—painting, reading, and reflecting on a life well-lived.
Shirley was a devout Christian and faithful churchgoer throughout her life. Her faith was a quiet strength that sustained her through joy and sorrow alike. We take comfort in knowing she is now at peace and in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was born on May 5, 1935, in Middleton, Nova Scotia, to Muriel and Archibald (both deceased). She was predeceased by her siblings Herald (“Bubby”), Greta, and Gerald (“Sonny”), and is survived by her sister Mary.
She was the beloved mother of Kathy and Jean (both surviving), and Vicki (deceased), and grandmother to Robyn, Erin, Jason, Justin, Lora-Lee, Kristina, Stephen, and Robert. She was also predeceased by her former husband Donald John Vance who was also the father to her 3 children and later divorced from her second husband, Colin.
Shirley’s wit, warmth, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
