Obituary of Lucy Joan Poweska

Lucy Joan Poweska nee Provenzano

February 27, 1943 ~ November 1, 2019

Lucy Joan Poweska (nee Provenzano) was born on February 27, 1943 in Cranbrook, B.C. and passed peacefully at home at Moyie Lake on November 1, 2019 after an extraordinary life filled with laughter and love.

Joan was the cherished daughter of Mary (Isobel) and Giuseppe (Joe) Provenzano.  “Joannie P.” loved her family fiercely and counted many of her lucky friends in that category. Joan made lifelong friends wherever she went including during her tenure at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Victoria where she completed a degree in nursing. She went onto a successful career in hospital administration working at East Kootenay Community College, Kimberley Hospital and B.C. Interior Health where she was always highly regarded as being knowledgeable, fair and progressive.

Joan also gave back to the community as an elected official on the city of Cranbrook council and various land use boards over many years.

When Joan married John Poweska on June 26, 1965, their shared value of family paved a long happy road for the next 54 years. Joan was exceptionally proud of her children, Lisa and Mark, considering them her closest friends. Grandchildren Kiana and Luke were incredibly important to Joan and her generosity of time with them has shaped them into the wonderful people that they are today. And of course, more joy followed for ‘Abbie Dabbie’ when Kiana’s beautiful and clever daughters arrived on the scene!

Joan is survived by her husband, John, daughter Lisa (Dave) White and son Mark (Edie), grandchildren Kiana and Luke, and great grandchildren Ariella and Mira, and sister Marian (Jim) Corrigan and family.

A service will be held on Saturday November 23rd, 2019 at 2:00pm at Christ the Servant Church, 1100 14th Ave S, in Cranbrook, please join the family at the reception to follow.

The reception will be held from 4-7pm at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort, 209 Van Horne St. S. in Cranbrook.
