Obituary of Marlene Edna Prust

Marlene Edna Prust

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Marlene Edna Prust announce her peaceful passing with family by her side on May 19th, 2025.

Marlene was born on March 11th, 1938, in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan to Morris and Ethel Torgerson. Marlene grew up on her family’s farm, where she helped with the day-to-day tasks with her siblings and nearby neighbours. She loved being the oldest of four children in her family, with many friends around her at all times, which made the 3 mile walk to school every day more enjoyable.

Marlene moved to Saskatoon in 1959 where she worked at Millar’s Flower Shop and loved spending her days amidst all of the beauty. In October of 1960, she moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba to be close to Don Prust, who soon after became her lifelong love and husband. They married August 18th, 1961 back in Rose Valley. The following year in 1962, they welcomed their first son, Cam, in St. Boniface, Manitoba, and in 1968 after a move to Cudworth, Saskatchewan, they welcomed their second son Cory. For many years, the Prust family moved throughout the country for Don’s work, experiencing the vast glory of many provinces. This included some time in Churchill Falls, Labrador, another stint in Saskatchewan, a short period in Duncan, BC, before landing in their final home of Cranbrook, BC in 1976. Throughout the many moves and travels, Marlene was a devoted mother and homemaker while Don worked. Mom also enjoyed her weekly Friday grocery shops at Safeway, as this was her way of seeing Cam hard at work. After her afternoon of shopping she would go home and be greeted by her beloved companion, the family dog Tiny.

After Don retired in 1998, Marlene and Don found their love of traveling together, most notably to Cuba, Mexico, and Las Vegas. They moved into Willowbrook in 2004, where they lived the rest of their days in their special home together. Marlene enjoyed watching the baby ducks floating on the waterway off their back porch, and witnessing the fawns born each year. She also loved her afternoons baking with her granddaughter Mariah, making their special recipe chocolate chip cookies.

Marlene was predeceased by her loving husband, Don, parents Morris and Ethel Torgerson, sister Lorraine Cumming, and sister-in-law Lorelei Schultz (Torgerson).

Marlene is survived by her two sons, Cam (Leahann), and Cory, granddaughter Mariah (James) & her first great-grandchild on the way, brothers Garry (Marie) and Lyle (Rosanne), Marlene’s brother-in-law Wes (Rita) Cumming, Don’s sister Dorothy (Harold) Peel, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Davis, Dr. Berg, and the incredible third floor and Palliative Care nurses at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their special care and attention to Marlene’s comfort in her final days.

There will be a private family service held at Marlene’s request.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en.
