Obituary of Mary WILLIAMS

Mary “Mae” WILLIAMS

March 8, 1932 ~ November 29, 2025 (age 93)

Mary (Mae) Gwenllian Williams nee McLennan

Mae was born on March 8, 1932 and died on November 29, 2025 at the age of 93.

She was born in Fernie where she married Wilfred Williams on July 11, 1953. Together they raised 5 children in Fernie, moving to Cranbrook when health issues dictated.

Mom passed peacefully in her winter home, Melaque, Mexico after a brief illness with Linda and Cindy by her side and Ted on the phone.

Mom was a stalwart of the family as she and dad were always there to support us and all of our adventures. “Did you have fun?” was her favourite saying when we did not succeed in whatever we tried or specifically when a hockey game was lost. “Onward and Upward” became her mantra right until the very end.

Mom was a pioneer in many ways! She was one of the two first women to be elected to Fernie city council, serving from 1968-1972.

She loved learning and became a certified “Parliamentarian, one of the few in the area. She was an instructor at East Kootenay Community College as well. Mom was heavily involved in many organizations on the local, provincial and national level. She was active in the Public Library locally and provincially, supporting her vision of increased literacy in the area. With the Canadian Red Cross , she fulfilled many roles to the national level. Christ Church Anglican was her anchor and Mom fulfilled many roles there over her lifelong membership, as the needs arose.

Whatever Mom got involved with, she gave 100%, teaching all of us to value all lives through service to the community.

Mae leaves to mourn her surviving children Linda (Wayne), Cindy (Kerry) and Ted (Heather); Grandchildren Christopher (Gretchen), Tanya (Beckie), David, Rachel (George), Clayton (Leanna), Kevin (Anora), Jesse (Amanda), Laura (Ross), Annie (Alex), Great Grandchildren Bella and Bowie, Mason and Lonnie, Amber, Ethan and Austin, Austin and Jordyn, and Theo, her daughter-in-law Stephanie, her son Shaun (Pam), Amia and Brooklyn; Megyn, Luc and Jake, and her brother Malcolm (Marjorie) McLennan.

Mae was predeceased by her husband Wilf; her oldest son, Bob; her youngest son, Eric; and her grandson, Mark; as well as her parents Bill and Dolly McLennan and her sisters Stella and Margaret.
