Obituary of Melvin Lewis “Mouse” Downing
Melvin Lewis “Mouse” Downing
Melvin was the devoted husband of 61 years to his beloved Carole, and the proud father of John Downing, Cindy (Randy) McCloskey, and Mike (Chantal) Downing. He was a treasured grandfather to James (Sarah), Lindsay, Miya, and great-grandfather to Ezra and Lucy. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings Alice Downing, Bob Downing, and Ruby (JP) Rioux. He was predeceased by his brother Bill (Johanna). Melvin will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Raised in Kimberley BC, Melvin built a strong work ethic early in life. He had a long and distinguished career at the Cominco concentrator, and he also served as coroner – where he earned the nickname “Toetag” – and was proud to contribute to the community that shaped him. He was also involved with Kimberley Search and Rescue, where his deep knowledge of the land and ability to be calm under pressure made him a vital part of the team. Many will remember him for playing the local Santa over the years- an easy role for him given his warm personality.
Outside of work, Melvin found joy in the simple pleasures: early mornings spent fishing, time spent at his cabin in Skookumchuk, and long afternoons in the backyard shade with a drink in hand. Anyone who happened to walk past his house was liable to be invited over for a chat – and boy, did he love to gab. His conversations were as legendary as his sense of humour.
His courage showed itself early in life. As a young boy, during a fire in his family home – and even with one arm in a sling – Melvin guided his younger sister and infant brother to safety. His heroism earned him a letter from Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. That bravery carried through his entire life, especially in the way he faced his cancer journey: with strength, dignity, and remarkable resilience.
Melvin had a heart that never hesitated to give. He would never turn away someone in need and was generous in ways big and small, often quietly and without wanting recognition. Above all else, his greatest pride and deepest love were reserved for his family.
Melvin was a hero to many, a friend to all, and a man whose presence brought comfort, laughter, and warmth wherever he went. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the kindness he gave, and in the hearts and memories of those who loved him.
He will be profoundly missed.
