Obituary of Mike Haltman

Mike Haltman

It is with great sadness and much love we announce the peaceful passing of Mike Haltman of Windermere, BC, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the age of 88 years.

Mike is lovingly remembered by the love of his life, his wife Molly (Pauline), his three children Shane, Nicole and Michelle, son-in-law Jim and sister Pauline. He will be dearly missed by his furry grand pets Joshy and Ellie.

He was predeceased by his sister Helen, and his parents Peter and Anne.

Born on an acreage a short distance from Wynyard Saskatchewan, on October 3, 1937, Mike graduated from University of Saskatoon, with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a teaching certification. Later, Mike received his Master’s in Economics at the University of Calgary. His teaching career began in West Smokey Spruce Saskatchewan and eventually to Edmonton, Alberta where he taught junior high. While in Edmonton, Mike met and married Molly. Together with her young daughter, Michelle, they started a new chapter as a family.

Their careers brought them to Calgary in 1967, where Mike and Molly taught in the Catholic School System for many years. Mike began as a junior high teacher at Holly Cross School. He then moved to St. Francis High School where he taught Social Studies coached the debate club for many years. During that time, Mike was a dedicated father to his growing family, he was actively involved in competitive swim clubs and community hockey leagues. He was also involved within the Catholic community and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Up for new adventures, Mike and his family moved to an acreage outside of the city where they lived for several years. Mike and family lived the farm life with a big garden and surrounding pastures and a pond, where they skated on in the winter. Mike and his family helped raise chickens, hens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. Bonnie the cow and her calf Clyde, the horses, a sweet German Shepherd named Tasha, and a dear barn cat Menow made the daily chores extra special. Even with a busy schedule, Mike managed to make time to pursue his passions. This included keeping fit, running and playing hockey with his fellow teachers. Despite receiving a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in his fifties, Mike accepted the challenge and did not waiver.

In 1994 Mike and Molly retired from teaching and embarked upon a new chapter as “students”, learning how to golf, hike and ski. Embracing lake life and mountain life, they made the Columbia valley their new home filled with many outdoor adventures and world travels. Mike always took the time to say ‘hello neighbour’. He was an active member in his community, volunteering his time at various festivals, community events and the Invermere food bank.

Mike will be remembered for his giving nature with an unwavering dedication to community, being active, and life long learning. He appreciated every sunset.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Windermere, BC in late spring 2026. Mike will be laid to rest in the Windermere Cemetery Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to your local food bank. Random acts of kindness are always welcome.
