Obituary of Owen Picton

Owen Picton

May 8, 1971  –  August 28, 2025

Owen Picton passed away suddenly on August 28, 2025, in Fairmont Hot Springs, BC, at the age of 54, due to a heart attack related to diabetic complications.

Born in Windermere, BC, Owen dedicated his life to helping others through health care and athletics. He earned a degree in Human Kinetics from UBC, followed by a counselling diploma and certification as a Canadian Athletic Therapist and as a Registered Orthopedic Technician. He worked across Canada in various health care roles and as an athletic trainer for organizations including Field Hockey Canada, Capilano University, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Fluent in Japanese and a lifelong student of judo, Owen remained active in the sport despite health challenges, volunteering with the Invermere Judo Club after a leg amputation. He also served on provincial and national Athletic Therapy associations, mentoring aspiring professionals and chairing the Ethics Committee in BC. Outside of his professional and volunteer work, Owen enjoyed cooking, baking, and music. He played piano and, in recent years, found joy in singing with the Valley Voices choir.

Owen will be lovingly remembered by his father, Raymond; his twin brother, Evan (Lisa); niece Cassandra (Tristan) and nephews Braden and Rhett; and the many friends, colleagues, and students whose lives he touched with kindness, wisdom, and compassion. He was predeceased by his mother, Anne, in 2017.

A celebration of Owen’s life will be held on October 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere, BC. All who knew and loved Owen are warmly invited to attend.
