Verna May “Granny Barr” Barr

With heavy hearts we annouce the passing of Verna May Barr on July 24, 2025.

Verna May Barr

January 30, 1927 – July 24, 2025

98 years

Verna May (Atwood) Barr was born on January 30, 1927, in Raymond, Alberta. She was the fourth child and second daughter of Nephi and Jessie Atwood. When she was ten years old, she and her family moved to Jaffray, British Columbia, bringing with them twenty-five hundred head of sheep. She learned to work at a young age, as she was one of the older girls in the family of fourteen children. That good work ethic she exemplified all her life.

She began Grade 1 at the Bonnie View School, near Cardston, Alberta. After the family moved, she continued her schooling in Jaffray up to Grade 8. She loved to read and could recite poems from memory. She would often entertain us with her singing and yodeling, a talent she taught herself while riding her mule or one of the horses.

When she was fourteen, she met a handsome local fellow, Eddie Barr, and married him a few years later. They were married almost sixty-three years when he passed away in 2007. They raised seven daughters—Karen May, Sharon Ann, Lola Lynn (Dodie), Oralie Joy, Donell Gay, Daralyn Rae, and Nora Ann—and two sons, Vernon Eddie and Dean Clinton. She now has thirty-four grandchildren, one hundred and four great-grandchildren, and fourteen great-great-grandchildren. Amazingly, she could tell you all their names!

Verna led a busy life looking after her big family and working on the farm. However, she still took time to listen to anyone who needed to talk or wanted some advice. The love for her family was unconditional.

In later years, she loved to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in their school sports. She was an enthusiastic Jaffray Rebels fan and could often be seen in the gym cheering them on.

Verna was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She regularly attended Sunday meetings and loved to visit with the children and adults alike. After having been blessed with a very long life on earth, she will be welcomed in heaven by many loved ones who have passed on before. She truly believed that Families Are Forever!
