Obituary of Walter Joseph Sobistiansky

Walter Joseph Sobistiansky

It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and uncle. Walter passed away peacefully on the evening of March 13, 2026 at the age of 82, following a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary Sobistiansky, and his younger sister, Elizabeth (Lisa) Sherman.

Walter leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his sister Oresia Ogloza (Joe); his nephew Chris (Jackie) and their children, Sarah and Ethan; his nieces Leanne and her daughter Alexis, Catherine and her daughter Madelyn, niece Carrie and nephew Richard as well as his dear friend and companion, Hilde, along with many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched.

Walter was born in the small rural community of Vita, Manitoba, where he spent his early years. In time, the family moved to Winnipeg. Following high school, Walter explored several paths in search of his calling. Eventually, Walter enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, a chapter of his life that allowed him to travel to many faraway places. After completing his tour in the Navy, he moved to British Columbia, where he was employed in the pulp and paper industry as a power engineer. Though he valued this work, he soon felt the pull toward something new and relocated to Calgary, where he took on the position of a liability inspector for an insurance company. This role took him across Western Canada before ultimately settling in Vancouver, where he lived and worked until his retirement.

In those later years, Walter and Hilde embraced a quieter, more peaceful life in Invermere. He found great joy in camping and fishing, spending countless days surrounded by nature. Their travel trailer became a gateway to the life they enjoyed – simple and fulfilling.

Walter was also a passionate and talented photographer, capturing the natural beauty of British Columbia as well as the familiar charm of Winnipeg during his visits home. His love of music was reflected in his extensive vinyl collection, a source of great pride and joy throughout his life.

Though distance separated us, the time we shared was always deeply meaningful. Walter had no children of his own, but his nieces and nephews held an especially precious place in his heart—one defined by love, pride, and genuine connection. He took a sincere interest in their lives, celebrating their achievements and making time for them whenever he could.

Walter’s care was sincere and his love unmistakable. The quiet moments we shared – whether in conversation or in comfortable silence are memories we will carry with us always. Walter will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and above all, his deep and abiding love for his family.

Cremation has taken place, and in accordance with his wishes, a private graveside service will be held at Holy Family Cemetery in Winnipeg at a later date.

When we lose someone we love, they never truly leave us—they simply find a new place within our hearts. Walter, you will be forever loved and deeply missed.

Rest in Peace Vichnaya Pam’yat

God saw that you were weary

The hill too steep to climb,

He gently closed your tired eyes,

And whispered “Peace be thine”,

A tender thought brings a tear,

A silent wish that you were here.

We hold you close within our hearts,

And there you will remain,

To walk with us throughtout our lives,

Until we meet again.
