Another look at Sam Steele Days

Cranbrook’s Sam Steele Days was once again a roaring success.

Along with the food, ceremonies and perhaps the biggest Sam Steele Days parade ever, the weekend is a beehive of activity.

Seventy baseball and 80 soccer teams turned the Key City into tournament central, along with the Balls of Steele Bocce Tourney at Baker Park, Strong Man Competition on 10th Avenue and arm wrestling at the Legendary Byng Roadhouse.

Rotary Park downtown was bulging with vendors, events and thousands of people taking everything in – from dancers to music galore all spiced up with The Taste of Cranbrook. Nearby, logger sports, wiener dog races, bartending races and more kept onlookers laughing and mingling. (Have you ever seen, or heard, wiener dogs racing in slow motion? Give this a spin.

And for the second year in a row Wheels of Steele provided thrills a-plenty outside Western Financial Place.

During the June 22 City of Cranbrook council meeting, Mayor Lee Pratt raved about the weekend’s events, praising the estimated 800 volunteers required to stage the litany of events. The influx of visitors and encouragement to locals to get out and about likely resulted in “millions” of dollars being added to the local economy, he said.

Coun. Danielle Cardozo noted that there wasn’t a hotel or motel room to be found during the weekend.
