Fernie buzzing with new weekly events

City of Fernie residents continue to show great conviction when it comes to their overall sense of community.

In recent years the city has welcomed several new and exciting community events, including the Fernie Writers’ Conference and the Wapiti Music Festival.

And now, creating a stitch between events, the city has established the Sunday Social along Victoria Avenue, as well as the Wednesday Downtown Social.

Making the events happen is the Victoria Avenue Summer Initiatives Committee, which is a partnership of groups including the Fernie Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Fernie, the City of Fernie, the Arts Station and city media.

The first social on July 3 was a rousing success noted the committee last week in a report to city businesses.

“Making Victoria Avenue a vibrant place to be is a team effort. It’s about us building relationships with our business neighbours and for us all to get the most out of what’s going on by asking for feedback from our visitors and locals. Ask your customers how they are enjoying Fernie and the downtown and if they have any suggestions for making ‘it better,’” stated Sarah Parry on behalf of the committee.

The Sunday Social runs in conjunction with the popular Mountain Market, now in its 10th summer of operations.

The socials continue to evolve, too.

“Many businesses are already planning on what they will do; bike polo, roller derby, bouncy houses, story time, PT the Clown, sidewalk sales and the trunk treasures sale at city hall grounds – it’s all about getting involved,” Parry urged.

Fernie’s Summer Downtown Socials are being held every Sunday from July 3 to Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
