Fernie movie premier of Suffragette
‘Suffragette’ is set to play at Fernie Arts Station on March 9, at 7 p.m. as an opener to the Women’s Day events that will run all day Saturday, March 12 at the Community Centre.
Inspired by true events, Suffragette movingly explores the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives. Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of the powerful drama about the fight for equality in early-20th-Century Britain.
The stirring story centres on Maud, a working wife and mother who becomes an activist for the Suffragette cause alongside women from all walks of life. Suffragette is directed by BAFTA Award winner Sarah Gavron and written by Emmy Award winner Abi Morgan.
Suffragette received numerous claimed reviews including:
“Hot Blooded and riveting” – The Telegraph; “By avoiding the usual cliches of the freedom saga, Suffragette finds its way to its own, specific integrity. It’s a movie that’s easier to respect than love, but it is something to respect” – San Fransisco Chronicle.
Did you know Canada gave women the right to vote in 1918? However, Aboriginal women did not get this right until 1960. England granted the right to vote in 1928 (the period dealt with in the film is actually 1912), interestingly Switzerland only granted women the right in 1971 and Portugal in 1976. Saudi Arabia, one of the last remaining countries in the world not to have given women the right to vote did so in 2011.
Tickets are available via the Goddess Rising Website and after last year’s sell-out movie event you are really encouraged to buy in advance of the day.
