Sewing for Beginners

Thursdays / September 8 to 29 / 7-9 p.m.

$130 Including fabric or $100 plus fabric

Have a sewing machine but don’t know where to start? Join Athena Knibbs as she teaches you the basics of sewing in this introductory class.

Learn the basics and get started sewing your own home items, simple garments and accessories. Topics to be covered are: how to use your sewing machine, basic stitches, button holes, zippers, finishing, reading patterns and choosing fabrics. If time allows, basic hand stitching and appliqué will be covered to add personal touches to your completed items. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of projects or bring your own simple pattern. Must bring own sewing machine in good working order as well as a basic sewing kit (scissors, needle, thread, measuring tape and fabric marker, found at local quilt shop). Adult Wheel (Pottery)

Feel centered this winter! Explore the creativity of clay using the potter’s wheel with instructor Kerri Holmes. This class is for beginners to those with some experience. This class involves making common tableware on the pottery wheel but may also involve molds and hand-building techniques.

Limited to 4 people, this becomes almost individual instruction. Ages 15+.

Michael Hepher of 7am Creative is leading a hands-on workshop that will cover the basics of building a business or personal brand. Branding is more than just designing your logo (which we’ll work on), it’s understanding how applying consistent visual characteristics to your marketing can increase awareness and impact of your business or creative pursuit. Watercolour Basics – Getting Started

Always wanted to learn how watercolour paintings are created? Join local artist Pamm Ciupa for this great weekend workshop! Pamm will demonstrate and instruct on the wonders of this so-called elusive media through her guidance of the techniques that make up this form of painting. Learn washes,  glazing with wet and dry brushes, colour mixing, and brush strokes. You will leave this great class with an understanding of and the ability to start your very own water colour journey!

Encaustic Art

Saturday / October 15 / 10am-4pm

Join Jeanne Parker in learning this exciting ancient Greek art form made from beeswax, resin and coloured pigment. An artist must work quickly as the materials are heated and applied to a surface and begin to harden as soon as they leave the heat source. Objects such as fabric, paper, metal,  leaves or anything from your imagination can be added to the wax to form interesting and unique shapes, guaranteeing that each creation is one of a kind!

This class is appropriate for all skill levels and interests.

Spinning for Beginners

Mondays / October 17 to November 7 / 7-9p.m.

To spin on a spinning wheel is going back to the basics. A delightful form of art therapy that has existed for centuries. Learn to spin sheeps wool, llama,  alpaca and other natural fibres into luscious soft light yarn. This is a great class for knitters, crocheters, weavers and fibre artists. Focusing on the technique of the ethnic, traditional, natural style of spinning, this class enables you to transition between spinning one-ply yarn into finishing with your very own large ball of handspun yarn! Cathy Smith-Clark has over 20 years of spinning experience and is thrilled to be able to introduce new people to or offer those in the know the opportunity to learn this amazing art.

Break the Rules Patchwork – Fresh Modern Quilting

Sundays / October 23 and 30 / 2-5pm

This fun class will give participants a taste of contemporary patchwork. Modern quilting is about creating a new twist in conventional quilt designs.

In this class, the focus is to create works that reflect the personality of the designer; either using traditional patterns or improvisational techniques blended with the esthetic of today. There are no rules! This course is designed for any level of sewers – novice and experienced sewers alike, all are welcome! The instructor will being a variety of fabrics however everyone is encouraged to bring their own if desired, whether is be vintage sheeting, lines, old cotton clothing,  or fabric from an ever-growing stash.

Sewing Green

$50 Plus Previously Loved Clothes or Fabrics

Learn how to rework old items into new! Discover the hot trend of upcycling old clothing and fabrics such as sheets, linen, and wool sweaters. Upcycling has many advantages, such as saving money and experimenting with new techniques without wasting fabric, not to mention lessening the environmental impact of textile production on the environment. This course requires a one hour “coffee chat”, discussing potential projects and supplies needed. You will then take a trip to local thrift stores to source out fabrics. The date and time of the prep class will be determined once registration is complete. Potential projects are endless but can include a new hobo bag from cargo pants, a blanket from wool sweaters, or a patchwork obi belt! Participants must bring a working sewing machine as well as a basic sewing kit. Course is designed for any skill level.

Basic Hand Typesetting for Letterpress Printing

Friday and Saturday / November 25-26 / 7-9:30pm and 9a.m.-5 p.m.

$195 Including Materials

Letterpress printing has become an artisan trade with a unique aesthetic and tactile appeal. The printing process used in letterpress printing has remained virtually unchanged in 500 years. Because it is the only relief printing process, the product has a 3 dimensional, tactile quality that modern digital presses cannot achieve. At this workshop Michael Hepher will teach you how to pick, set, and print with traditional lead type on a 100 year old Chandler & Price press. The end result will be a small printed product like a broadsheet, poem, or paper ephemera that you can take home. Bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty!

Join Lesley Graham for gallery art attacks, building caves, drawing, clay, big painting and wood inventing. Dress for mess and movement in the bright attic studio. Perfect if you want to try lots of art techniques.

Yupo for Youth

Ages: 10 and up

Cost: $40 plus some materials

Learn how to paint with watercolour on Yupo, a synthetic ‘paper’ — a painless introduction to watercolour. You can easily wipe off paint and restart your artwork. Bring one brush and have fun trying watercolor in this one-day workshop. Material list provided upon registration.

Beginners (USA), an audience favourite at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, is a mov­ing and oftentimes hilarious portrait of family, love, loss, and self-discovery. It tells the heart-warming story of two major points in the life of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). One timeline follows the deterioration of Oliver’s father who is dying of cancer and, at the age of seventy-five, has also come out of the closet. The other takes place following his father’s death.The outcome is a thoroughly enjoyable character study about people opening up and discovering them­selves despite age, preconceptions and illness.

Pianist / Silent Film Accompaniment – Robert Bruce presents Faust

Monday, October 24 at 8 p.m.

A self-taught composer/pianist whose creative path often leads to uncharted territory, Robert Bruce has since the late 1970s developed a diverse catalog of original work which includes music for young children, piano repertoire for students, as well as music for film, television and animation. Robert Bruce has been presenting his Live Music/Silent Film programs since 2002 and Faust is perhaps his most striking in terms of the synergy between music and film; having a deep and haunting effect. Murnau’s classic 1926 silent film presented with live original score by composer/pianist Robert Bruce was the closing program for the 2011 Toronto Silent Film Festival. Faust is a classic silent film produced in 1926 and directed by F.W. Murnau.

Murnau’s version draws on the older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe’s classic version.www.robertbrucemusic.com.

Folk / Blues – Jim Byrnes

Thursday, November 3 at 8 p.m.

Starting piano at age five, by age thirteen Jim was singing and playing blues guitar and he continues to play on his favorite guitar, a Gibson 1969 Hummingbird.

In 2007, the Toronto Blues Society named Brynes the Male Vocalist of the Year as well as receiving the award for Recording of the Year for House of Refuge.

Folk / Country – Madison Violet

Tuesday, November 22 at 8 p.m.

Both hailing from Scottish small towns in Canada, Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac have chosen another musical path; one that channels their parent’s vintage record collection that comprised of the likes of Neil Young and Dolly Parton. The pair have come into a sound of their own though which has been described as both city-folk and Americana. Madison Violet, have toured their alt-country modern-roots sound and flawless harmonies across the world for over 10 years. They have been nominated for handfuls of East Coast Music Awards and were named ‘Best Vocal Group’ at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards and they are Grand Prize winners of the 2010 John Lennon Song Writing Contest. Tim’s music would fit right in.Williams is a blues-based singer / songwriter / multi – instrumentalist. He is a 40 year veteran of the ‘Roots’ music scene in North America, roots which stretch back to the coffee-house scene of his native California in the 1960’s. Tim’s live solo shows are a trip down the river of North American music…blues, ragtime, old-time country with dashes of Mexican and Hawaiian influence, performed on a variety of string instruments. With the political edge of Billy Bragg, the romance of David Gray and the Celtic lyricism of the Waterboys, Andy is a fully paid up 21st Century Troubadour (and that’s also the title of his first book, recently published in Ireland to rave reviews).White has earned a global following for blending folk and pop styling with a poet’s sensibility. Working with the great names of Irish music – Sinead O’Connor, Van Morrison – and writing with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Neil and Tim Finn, he has won Ireland’s top songwriting awards and toured the world many times.
