Maidentrip: award-winning film of girl who sailed world solo
Join Selkirk Secondary School’s outdoor program students on Friday, March 14 for an entertaining evening celebrating and supporting the spirit of youth outdoor adventures. Enjoy an inspiring film, student photo show, door and draw prizes, home-baked goodies and more.
Maidentrip follows the incredible adventure of 14-year-old Laura Dekker as she sets out – camera in hand – on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone.
In the wake of a year-long battle with Dutch authorities that sparked a global storm of media scrutiny, Laura found herself far from land, family and unwanted attention, exploring the world in search of freedom, adventure, and distant dreams of her early youth at sea.
Winner of the SXSW Audience Award 2013 and several other film awards, this feature documentary brings us Laura’s brave, defiant voice through a mix of Laura’s own video and voice recordings at sea and her explorations of locations including the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and South Africa. The film trailer can be viewed at www.maidentrip.com.
This fundraising event is a collaboration between Selkirk’s outdoor program class, the Kimberley Happiness Project and Wildsight. All proceeds will go to support Selkirk’s outdoor programs and Wildsight’s local GoWild! program for high school youth.
Maidentrip screens Friday, March 14 at McKim Theatre. Doors at 6:45 p.m. and film at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation. For more information email [email protected].
