Photographs by Matt Kuhn

Join photographer Matt Kuhn at the opening of his exciting exhibit of beautiful photographs.

Matt moved to Fernie from Prince George 10 years ago for the skiing, and has never looked back. He has spent the past few years working as a professional photographer shooting weddings, portraits, and skiing in the winter at Island Lake. These experiences, and his time in photography school, have given him a solid foundation on the technical aspects of digital photography. In his current body of work Matt is getting back to basics, and exploring his passion for manual film based photography.

“Old Cameras New Tricks” is an exhibition of images taken with older, difficult, and character filled cameras. Matt really enjoys the simplified cameras, and loves how they change how images are captured. The act of photography using high-tech cameras provide the photographer with instant gratification, they can see the final product almost immediately; therefore the focus is on the end result not the process. When using film cameras, mistakes happen and remain unchecked, often for the better.

One of the places Matt has drawn inspiration from is his grandfathers old 6 x 9 camera. The film for this model is no longer produced causing Matt to get creative and often unpredictable results, for example the film may be scratched or scraped as it winds through the camera, making each exposure unique. In a digital world these mistakes seem unwelcome and out of place, whereas with film the act of photographing is the goal leaving the final image as a part of the process.

Join Matt at the opening reception for ‘Old Cameras New Tricks’ on Thursday, February 28 from 7 -9 p.m. Come see what new tricks Matt has come up with!

The exhibit continues until Tuesday, March 26.
