Pride comes to Cranbrook

The legendary Charley Pride performed at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook Thursday, May 22.

The former million selling, Grammy Award-winning performer helped create a bridge to country music for African American performers by becoming the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 1971, on the heels of the success of Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’.

Pride, 76, who one-time held professional baseball aspirations, even playing minor ball in nearby Missoula, Mont., performed a collection of his hits from over the years.

The show went off without a hitch despite a large power outage that hit about half the city a couple of hours prior to the show. A Canadian Tire delivery truck backed into a power pole along Victoria Avenue Thursday afternoon, severing power to a central ring in the city for about two hours.
