Region featured in new docuseries on APTN

A docuseries set to air on APTN in the new year features Ktunaxa Nation/East Kootenay locales.

The first episode of Animal Nation, launching January 8, was shot in Cranbrook, Elkford and other regional places.

This groundbreaking project, created in collaboration with Indigenous communities across Canada and the U.S., takes viewers deep into the heart of some of the continent’s most beautiful wild spaces and tells the stories of seven iconic animals, guided by the people who have co-existed and protected their shared territories for generations.

Narrated by acclaimed actress Tantoo Cardinal (Dances with Wolves, Wind River, Killers of the Flower Moon), this incredible series features fascinating animal behaviour and on-the-ground conservation efforts, with each of the seven episodes highlighting a keystone species: Bear, Beaver, Bison, Caribou, Eagle, Salmon, and Wolf.

Created by Ojibway producer Jesse Bochner and Moroccan-born producer Ari A. Cohen, and a talented team of Indigenous key creatives — writers, directors, editors, composers and an acclaimed narrator to be announced — the series blends everything audiences love in wildlife storytelling with the depth, insight, and relationships that come from Indigenous knowledge and culture.

The first episode ‘Bear’ focusses on spiritual connections with awe-inspiring grizzly bears as revealed through research, conservation, and a fight to protect their habitat. This episode was filmed in Elkford, Cranbrook and East Kootenay (Ktunaxa Territory and the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary).

The third episode – ‘Bison’ was also filmed in nearby locations, including Lethbridge, Edmonton, Elk Island National Park, the Kainai Nation and Kikino Métis Settlement in Alberta and in Fort Belknap in Montana. It airs January 22.
