Small World Project performs Sunday

Galaxie Rising Star winners Small World Project will be performing in Fernie on Sunday, March 6 at 8 p.m. at The Arts Station.

Small World Project, winners of CBC’s Galaxie Rising Star award, are bringing to the big screen a unique performance combining the oldest surviving animated feature-length film The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) by German director Lotte Reiniger with a brand new score composed and performed live by the Montréal-based trio.

Hailed by critics as the “new maestros of silent film,” the three members of Small World Project create, with their collection of small instruments (ukulele, banjolele, toy piano, glockenspiel, etc.), an astonishing soundscape in constant dialogue with the characters and scenes of the film.

Inspired by the Tales of One Thousand and One Nights (or Arabian Nights), Lotte Reiniger’s film uses her original silhouette animation technique—silhouette figures photographed in stop-motion against voluptuous backgrounds to create a film of technical complexity and haunting beauty.

A gifted designer as well as a spellbinding storyteller, Reiniger creates a cohesive visual universe through which Prince Achmed rides on his magical horse, wooing a fair princess and battling a host of demons.

Be prepared for a completely absorbing light and sound extravaganza!
