Taking Root opens at Fernie Museum Gallery Sept. 3

A new art show is opening at the Fernie Museum Gallery, beginning Saturday, Sept. 3 with an opening reception.

Artist Laura Nelson has a collection of 23 paintings entitled ‘Taking Root,’ that will be on display at the 491 2nd Ave. location daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. until Oct. 7.

“Fernie’s fabulous forests are part of our heritage and a huge inspiration for my work,” Nelson said, adding, “Being literally surrounded by the most easterly temperate rainforest in North America, trees are deeply rooted in our everyday lives. We love to hike, bike and ski through the trees; our homes are mostly built of wood, and we keep them warm in the winter burning wood we salvage from our forests. People visit Fernie from around the world to experience the beauty of our forests, and the wildlife, rivers and streams they support.”

Taking Root celebrates the beauty and diversity of the tree and invites viewers to go beyond the aesthetic and reflect on the significance of our forests and their own relationship with the tree.

To bring awareness to the Museum’s archival and artifact collection relating to this theme,  a small historical exhibit highlighting Fernie’s relationship with the tree  will complement the exhibit.
