Christmas time in the Platzl

By Robin Knight

Christmas time is coming, and there’s no better place to get into the Christmas spirit than in Kimberley’s Platzl.

Kids Craft CornerWith snow gracing it daily, lots of new shops opening up to help you shop local, European Christmas baking available at the bakery, and coffee shops tempting you to sit down for coffee, or restaurants beckoning for lunch or dinner with friends, there is also now a new reason to stop by the Platzl.

The Kimberley City Bakery has set up a free craft corner Saturday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. until Christmas in their back room, where parents can bring their children and let them make or decorate a decoration for their Christmas tree.

“It was fun making them, and fun having the other kids,” said seven-year-old Natasha about the inaugural craft corner last Saturday.

With many children stopping by to make something to bring home to decorate the Christmas tree, parents enjoyed the rest, while the children enjoyed making snowflake and snowman foam ornaments.

Owners Eric and Michelle Forbes were thrilled by the response.

“It’s great to see that it’s so well received by the community,” Forbes says. “We thought it would be nice to have a place that kids could have something to do here in the Platzl.” Inspired by the Bass Pro Shop in Calgary, the bakery is bringing this tradition to the Kootenays. All are welcome to join this new holiday tradition!
