Fernie Chamber thankful to council
The following is a letter sent to City of Fernie council by the Fernie Chamber of Commerce.
Dear Mayor Giuliano and Councillors
The Fernie Chamber of Commerce would like to extend its thanks and congratulations to Mayor and Council for their decision to adopt in principle the recommendations resulting from the parking strategy for curbside patios on 2nd Avenue.
Having been involved with the decorations and the Summer Social committees it is evident that there is a need for additional outside seating and an area where people can sit, relax and take in the beauty of our downtown and its unique backdrop. The provision of adequate seating is an important part of a well-maintained area and additional seating encourages people to stay longer, spend more money in our community and experience the social aspect of outside seating.
Curbside public seating patios can offer well-designed seasonal, outdoor public spaces and seating. During warm-weather months, when the demand to spend time outdoors increases, curbside seating patios may temporarily replace a few parking spots but they offer so much more for our residents and visitors. They will also help beautify 2nd Avenue if the use of attractive landscaping is a requirement.
Whilst we have not seen the results of the parking strategy we are hopeful that a number of bars, cafes and restaurants on 2nd Avenue will consider this a step forward and will be excited about this great opportunity and will be supported by City Staff with their applications.
Yours sincerely
Sarah Parry, on behalf of the Chamber President and Board of Directors
