Teck giving $1 million to Trans Canada Trail for Kootenays
Teck Resources has announced it is providing $1 million to the Trans Canada Trail for trail development in the Kootenays.
With this donation a real opportunity presents itself to develop sections of the Trans Canada Trail in Eastern B.C., stated Trails BC in a press release.
“The Trans Canada Trail is part of our shared Canadian heritage, linking people and communities from coast to coast,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO of Teck. “Many of our employees live and work in the Kootenays, and this investment will help to connect their communities and families, while also helping to build this national legacy for all Canadians.”
Teck’s investment will help support completion of sections of the Trail linking together the communities of Trail, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford.
From Vancouver Island to Castlegar, the Trans Canada Trail is nearly complete, however much work is needed to secure a trail routing east into Alberta.
“Teck’s contribution is a catalyst that will help enable the completion of B.C.’s Trans Canada Trail by 2017,” said Al Skucas, the Cranbrook-based president of Trails BC. “The Kootenays/BC Rockies are one of the most scenic regions in the country. The future development of the Trans Canada Trail in the region will not only benefit local recreational users but will make the Kootenays/BC Rockies a must do section of the Trans Canada Trail.”
The Trans Canada Trail began in 1994 with the vision of a trail connecting the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The Trans Canada Trail foundation is working in BC with its provincial partner Trails BC to complete the trail by 2017; the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation.
