25 local cadets visit Nanton Bomber Museum

On September 17, 25 youth aged 12-18 from 552 Key City Royal Canadian Air Cadets travelled to the Bomber Museum of Canada at Nanton, Alberta, to tour the museum and witness the engine start up of the Lancaster Bomber, which has been a part of Nanton for 51 years.

This was the last time that the Lancaster would be started this season.

During the start up, one engine flamed out and refused to start. We now know why the fire department was standing by, though the fire was out before they turned on the hoses.  In the evening, cadets were kept busy playing our style of “minute to win it” and approached the crazy challenges with enthusiasm.

Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to sleep underneath the Lancaster on Saturday night, being careful not to bump their heads too hard.

On Sunday, we stopped for a tour of the Bellevue Underground Coal Mine.

Amy and Pat gave cadets insight to how things operated in the mines more than 100 years ago, when even eight to 17-year-olds were working in the mines underground. Cadets have a much greater appreciation for current working and life conditions.

Cranbrook’s 552 Key City Royal Air Cadets  Gateway to Excellence meets every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Newlife Foursquare Church, old 10th Ave. School, #308-10th Ave. South, second Floor.

There is no direct cost to join, as the Sponsoring Committee fundraises to pay the $100 per every cadet, owing to the BC Air Cadet League on an annual basis.

Joining Requirements: Youth 12 – 18;  Photocopy of Birth Certificate & Care Card; Application, completed & signed by cadet & parent and you must have a willingness to learn something new.

Cadets apply to attend two, three and six week summer training courses, which include free travel, accommodations, food and cadets receive a training bonus of $60 week.

Activites include: ground school training – first step in becoming a pilot for free in the cadet program; familiarization flying, gliding, survival camp outs, leadership camp outs, range, field trips, airport tours, citizenship,  effective speaking, drill team and so much more.

You can earn high school and volunteer hour credits as well.
