Savannah Wurzer from Parkland Middle School in Cranbrook has won the draw for an IPod in the preliminary round of the B.C. Schools Math Contest – East Kootenay region. There were a total of 143 contestants from Parkland Middle School, Mount Baker Secondary School, Golden Secondary, Laurie Middle School and Jaffray Middle School.

The math contest is open to all Grade 8 through 12 students in schools in the region served by College of the Rockies: Cranbrook, Creston, Fernie, Golden, Invermere and Kimberley.

Weekly practice problems were published in the Kootenay Advertiser and on Facebook with the preliminary round written on April 4 in the schools. The final round will be written on Tuesday, May 8 at the Cranbrook Campus of College of the Rockies. Each participant in the final round will receive a t-shirt and there will be prizes for the winners.

“There are many mathematics contests intended for gifted students; this one is aimed at average students who are interested in mathematics,” noted Dr. Jim Bailey COTR math instructor. “Although this is the 16th annual contest,” Dr. Bailey continued, “This is the first time College of the Rockies will host the finals.”

The contest is sponsored by College of the Rockies, the Kootenay Rockies Innovation Council, School District #5 and the Kootenay News Advertiser.
