Cadets take part in ‘Fan Flying’

Familiarization Flying, sometimes referred to as “Fan Flying” because air cadets are fans of flying, was finally accomplished for 552 Key City Air Cadets on Sunday, September 25.

This was the third time that we had tried to get our certified pilot, Captain Lewall, out from Grand Forks to take cadets up.

Weather and unforeseen circumstances gave us a few challenges in arranging this activity. In groups of two or three, cadets were given a flight in his Beechcraft, small single engine plane. They learned about safety, how air planes fly, how to steer and the really fun part, positive and negative G-forces.

The cadets who are planning to earn their pilots license were given an opportunity to take control of the plane and they all did very well; of course our trained pilot was there incase anything went wrong.

The weather changed as the day went on and the last scheduled flight did not happen, in fact, Capt. Lewall had to spend another night in Cranbrook. It took us a few attempts, but we finally got to have a great day in the air. Thank you to Capt. Lewall, D.N.D., and the weather.
