College of the Rockies board announces new members
The Board of Governors of the College of the Rockies is pleased to announce the appointment of one new Board member and the election of three.
Appointed to the College Board by the Province effective September 16, 2011 for a term ending July 31, 2013 is Doris Penner of Invermere.
Elected to the College Board effective October 2011 for a three-year term by his membership is College of the Rockies support staff representative Colhane (Colin) Martyniuk of Cranbrook.
Re-elected to the Board effective October 2011 for a one-year term by the students of the College of the Rockies is student David Wiebe of Creston. Elected to the board by the students of the college, also for a one-year term effective October 2011, is Katie Hamar of Moncton, New Brunswick.
These Board members join previously appointed members Chair Orest Federko, Vice Chair Richard Reinders, Alex Jensen, Joe Pierre, Rob Ondrik, David Handy and Jim Abbott, COTR elected faculty representative Grant Unger, and COTR Education Council Chair Jim Bailey.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Doris, Colin, and Katie to the College’s Board of Governors and to welcome David back to the Board,” said board chair Orest Federko. “Their diverse backgrounds and experiences will bring unique skills and points of view to the board and will serve us well in the year ahead. I look forward to working with each of them.”
Doris Penner (pictured) is owner of Quiniscoe Homes Ltd., a custom homebuilding company operating in the Windermere Valley. She also works as a certified Hellerwork Practitioner. Doris has served as President of the B.C. Homebuilders Association and has been a licensed real estate sales specialist as well as an aircraft engineer and pilot. Doris is active in her community and currently teaches rowing, is the club treasurer, sings in the Valley Voices Choir and is active in supporting the Columbia Arts Council.
Colin Martyniuk has been an employee of COTR since 1990 and is currently the senior facilities attendant and a first aid instructor. He spent his first seven years working in the trades department. Colin has been involved in a number of college committees over the years, including health and safety, and has held varying positions on the CUPE Local 2773 executive.
David Wiebe is in his third year of study at COTR. He completed the Tourism and Recreation Management diploma program last April and is now enrolled in University Studies. David is Vice President of the College of the Rockies Students’ Association and a member of the men’s Avalanche volleyball team. This is David’s second term as an elected student representative on the college board.
Katie Hamar is also in her third year of study at COTR and has completed the Tourism and Recreation Management diploma program. She is now enrolled in COTR’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Practices degree program. Katie has served as a resident advisor at the Purcell House Student Residence and as Director at Large for the COTR Students’ Association. She is currently COTR Students’ Association Secretary.
