COTR’s Tourism and Recreation Management goes online

The Tourism and Recreation Management program at College of the Rockies will be offered entirely online starting in September 2012. This will not replace the face-to-face program at the Cranbrook Campus but will offer students a new opportunity to study on their own time, at their own pace, anywhere.

“The major advantage for students is that they do not have to leave their jobs in order to obtain the certificate or diploma in tourism and recreation management,” noted Instructor Grant Unger. “They can study full time or part time, which makes it more attractive to people in the industry for promotion or advancement purposes. It may also be of interest to international students.

“Online students would not be working in isolation,” Unger continued. Through the Moodle online instructional system they are able to contact the instructor(s) and other students. They would be part of a cohort and able to take part in group discussions and group projects. Plus they follow the same provincial curriculum as the face-to-face students.”

Part of the program involves assignments and practical experience including planning a special event, taking part in community recreation programs, volunteer work and site visitations to small and medium sized enterprises in the tourism industry. “There is also a work placement component, which all students must fulfill and which can be done anywhere in the world as long as it meets program requirements,” Unger said. “This component is supervised by the college’s Student Employment Services department.”

Interested individuals can apply to either the face-to-face or online program now but would not be able to confirm their registration until late April as students entering their second year of studies have preference.
