Through Human Eyes a testament to a community’s support for Haitian relief efforts

On February 9 over 200 people viewed Chelsea McCormack’s documentary film, Through Human Eyes at the Key City Theatre. The film documents the struggles of the Haitian community and highlights the humanitarian efforts of Dr. Bob Cutler and other ‘Cranbrooktonians.’

For over a decade local business owner Rick Klassen and Cutler have returned to this small Caribbean country numerous times. Cutler has led teams of doctors, nurses and lay people to assist with food aid, the building and rebuilding of homes and educational structures, drilling of water wells and a new, free standing medical clinic.

“In the near term it comes down to saving lives,” said Cutler. “Long term it’s about building capacity with the Haitian people to meet their own challenges.”

Klassen agrees. “Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. They just don’t have the organization or infrastructure of a first world nation to deal with the type of devastation they’ve endured –political instability, earthquake, floods, cholera and mass homelessness.”

Klassen points out that their work continues to be possible because of yearly support from the Cranbrook Community. “Cranbrook donations, our annual Gala and auction fundraiser and numerous volunteers make it possible for us to deliver some hope and the means to rebuild stability. The Cranbrook medical community, business community and concerned citizens have all stepped up to make a difference in Haiti.”

Cutler points out that one of the easiest ways to contribute is to attend the annual Hungry For Life Gala and auction.

“It’s a positive and fun event and helps all of us volunteers carry that spirit of hope back to the citizens of Haiti.”

The Hungry For Life Gala and auction has become a much-anticipated annual event that takes place each May and features renowned auctioneer and entertainer Gerry Schubert. Volunteers are already working on this year’s Las Vegas theme and expect it to surpass last year’s acclaimed Studio 54.
