Tonight’s DTSS Band Concert launches busy stretch for valley

It is going to be a busy week in the Columbia Valley when it comes to Christmas season events.

First up is David Thompson Secondary School’s Bands Concert in the school gym tonight (Dec. 8) at 7 p.m. Admission is via a silver collection at the door.

Another annual Christmas event is the season sounds of the Valley Voices Christmas Concert, with two shows this year at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere. The first show is Friday, Dec. 9, beginning at 9 p.m. and the second is Saturday, Dec. 10, beginning at 10 p.m.

Also Dec. 9 is Christmas Shopping Night at Fairmont Hot Springs. Running from 4 to 8 p.m., the event has locals businesses, shops, restaurants and cafes staying open later for a special evening. Call 250-688-1742 for more info.

Saturday a smoking busy day in the valley

Saturday, Dec. 10 has a wealth of community events and entertainment for residents and visitors to take in.

If you’ve got wee ones at home, why not start the day with a Breakfast With Santa?

This annual Radium Resort family favorite features a pancake breakfast with Santa including pictures with the jolly one, as well as plenty of activities and a goody bag for the kids. Also happening Saturday, Dec. 10 is the Arts Alive Market at Invermere’s Pynelogs Cultural Centre, running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a wide range of Canadian made goods available.

Another Saturday morning event is the Christmas Silent Auction, a fundraising for the Invermere Public Library.

There is something for everyone on your gift list. Stop in at the library and post your bids before the auction closes at noon, December 10. All funds raised by the auction support the programs and materials of the Invermere public Library.

Keep the seasonal Saturday rolling is the annual Christmas Tea and Bake Sale at the Windermere Community Hall. Running from 1 to 3 p.m., the Windermere Health Care Auxiliary event will even feature entertainment this year provided by the Dance Tree Community Program. Christmas baskets and items will be raffled off. Admission is $5 per person.

And a great way to top off an extremely busy Saturday is with a nice meal. Check out the Terra Madre Day Celebration Dinner at 6 p.m., with a multi-course African-inspired menu at Birchwood Restaurant. Hosted by Slow Food Columbia Valley, the proceeds go to 1,000 Gardens in Africa Project. Admission is $55 for members and $65 for non-yet members.Tickets are available at Circle Health Foods. If you can’t get your wee ones to Radium on Saturday, no sweat, head to Fairmont Hot Springs on Sunday where Santa will be holding court from noon to 3 p.m. during the fouth annual ‘Santa in Fairmont’ event for kids and parents at Smoking Waters Cafe. Holiday Train rolls into Radium

The Holiday Train returns to Radium Hot Springs this year, on Dec. 13. The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fight against hunger. At each event, the train provides a box car stage, a lineup of great musical talents and a corporate contribution to the local food bank. The community, in turn, is encouraged to donate food and funds, all of which stays in the community.

The event start at 5 p.m. and the train arrives at 6 p.m.
