City recommends funding for 37 organizations

A total of $283,947.55 in Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Programs funding is being recommended for 37 City of Cranbrook and regional organizations.

Mayor Lee Pratt and Councillors Danielle Cardozo and Tom Shypitka attended the Columbia Basin Trust Community Input Meeting held on April 12. Based on their assessment of the applications and information provided in writing and by presentation, they are recommending the projects and funding levels.

The proposed allocation of funds for Cranbrook in 2016 is $292,775.49. A total of 37 applications for funding were received this year with the total amount requested of $283,947.55.

City council unanimously supported the recommendations April 25.

Coun. Shypitka said he found the experience of listening to local groups enlightening.

“I never realized how many volunteers and great projects there are out there,” he said.

Mayor Pratt agreed. “It was an eye opener. I’ve lived here all my life but I had no idea that many people step up and help,” he said.

Council’s recommendations will now be forwarded on to the Regional District of East Kootenay board for review. The RDEK board, which includes Mayor Pratt and Coun. Shypitka, will review recommendations at its meeting on June 10 and applicants will be contacted by a representative from RDEK the week of June 13 – 17 to advise of the outcome.

Any remaining balance will automatically be referred back to the Columbia Basin Trust if the city does not allocate the funds.
