Sparwood Spring Cleanup a success
The rain held off on Saturday, April 23 when almost 70 volunteers from across Sparwood gathered as part of the third annual Sparwood Cleanup Day.
It was a great turnout and wonderful to see so many from the community come out and help pick up litter in Sparwood.
Other Sparwood cleanups occurred during the week including families who could not make the Saturday event, Frank J. Mitchell Elementary School, classes from Sparwood Secondary School, and the Joy Global Occupational Health and Safety Committee (pictured above). The students cleaned areas around the school and Joy Global cleaned two major roads in Sparwood, including Douglas Fir Road where their offices are situated.
Sparwood Mayor Cal McDougall said the community cleanup campaign would be impossible without the volunteer help. Generous support was also provided by the East Kootenay Community Credit Union, Acklands-Grainger, Overwaitea, Teck, Lilac Terrace, and Pitch-In Canada.
“We want to thank everyone from the community who came out to help,” said McDougall. “It’s great that so many people are willing to give their time for the cause of environmental stewardship and we look forward to continuing this event in 2017.”
