15th Street S road failure to be fixed
It gives one an idea about how expensive road repairs are and what kind of an uphill climb the City of Cranbrook has when it comes to improving its thoroughfares.
Cranbrook council May 12 unanimously approved an emergency fix of 100 metres of 15th Street South, between 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue, with a ceiling price tag of $100,000.
The fix is necessary following a road failure earlier this spring.
“It has been determined that the bed under the road is made mostly of clay which, because of the extremely wet spring, became saturated with water and caused the road to fail,” reported the city’s Finance and Computer Services department.
The money for the work, which is not part of the 2014 roadwork program, will come from the city’s Accumulated Surplus Fund.
Chief administrative officer Wayne Staudt informed council the fund currently has more than $4 million and the city strives to ensure it continually has at least $2.5 million in it for emergency projects.
Staudt told council city engineering staff are “pretty sure” that the fix will only require road re-surfacing but once it is dug up, they may find more work needing to be done.
