The Cranbrook Curling Club was invaded Saturday by Whos, Pigs and Mice all ready to play against Goldilocks, Bo Sweep and Baa Baa Black Sheep.

‘Twas the 35th annual Heart and Stroke Bonspiel, a fundraiser with a decidedly Seussian feel.

The event is an important one for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, raising between $10,000 and $15,000 each year.

Thirty teams participated in the 2015 nursery rhyme themed bonspiel – up from 22 last year – and raised $12,750.

The increase in participants helped to make up for the loss of a major sponsor. “The meal used to be donated,” says volunteer Lynn Lee. “That loss was a $3,000 hit for us.”

With four-end games and randomly drawn prizes (along with those for top and bottom scores), the bonspiel is a great introduction to the game for non-curlers and new curlers.

Organizers hope to fill the schedule next year with six more teams.
